I can't believe he's gotten away with it!
Mel Gibson has escaped a jail sentence after pleading 'no contest' to the battery of his former partner Oksana Grigorieva. You might remember that the two have been having an on-going public battle, when Oksana released recorded phone-calls of Mel threatening her and calling her a "whore".
Yesterday, the actor admitted to domestic violence and was sentenced to 36 months informal probation along with 16 hours community service. He was also fined a total of $570 and ordered to undertake a year's domestic violence counselling, along with a year of mental health counselling, with the therapist he has been seeing since January. (WTF??)
His no contest plea is basically a guilty plea but Mel has completely avoided jail time and paying for his crime at all really! Apparently Mel struck a plea deal with prosecutors, who said they offered the deal to protect the victim - Oksana (so was money involved??).
Toady the actor was officially charged with "wilful and unlawfully use of force and violence upon" his ex. Gibson will complete his community service at the charity Mending Children International, where Oksana is president of the board of directors (ouch).
The Oscar-winner told the court:
"I slapped Oksana one time with an open hand in an attempt to bring her back to reality.I did not slap her hard, I was just trying to shock her so that she would stop screaming, continuing shaking Lucia (their daughter) back and forth."
