Dynamite is currently home to a wide variety of licensed comics, including everything from Green Hornet to Zorro to A Game of Thrones. The publisher hasn't slowed in gathering up new licenses either, with franchises like Flash Gordon and The Shadow also being recently announced.
Now Dynamite is adding one more property to their lineup. Today the publisher revealed it had acquired the rights to Voltron. Voltron was popularized in the '80s thanks to the animated series Voltron: Defender of the Universe. The show was adapted from footage of two Japanese programs - Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. In its most popular and iconic incarnation, Voltron features five young space pilots who combine their lion-shaped ships to form a giant, sword-wielding robot. In the original series, the heroes were frequently called upon to defend the planet Arus from the villainous King Zarkon and his allies.
Voltron has experienced a resurgence in popularity lately thanks to the Voltron Force animated series and rumors of a live-action film.
Brandon Thomas will write the series. While no artist has been announced yet, Dynamite did reveal that Alex Ross will provide covers. Ivan Reis and Jo Chen will also contribute covers to issue #1.
The series looks to be based heavily on the original series and the Lion Force version of Voltron. "We've been given a lot of latitude by our partners at Classic Media and World Events," said Dynamite Editor Joe Rybandt in the company's press release. "Nothing is off the table and if you've followed our releases featuring pop culture icons, you know that we take the best and add the new and create something unique and special on its own. Expect no different from Voltron."
Does that mean fans can expect an appearance from Vehicle Voltron or ties to the current animated series, which serves as a loose sequel to the '80s series? That remains to be seen. Dynamite hasn't revealed a ship date for Voltron #1, so we expect to hear more about the new series in the coming months. For now, head below to see the alternate covers for issue #1:
